Visible Thinking
Visible Thinking routines are useful when students are tuning in to a new unit of study. This one is adapted from the See Think Wonder routine. This is a See, Hear, Smell, Think, and Wonder graphic organizer. For this one students visited an early childhood classroom to see what learning looks like there and to compare it to the learning environment in 3rd grade.

Love and Logic
Love and Logic help the students do their best learning by ensuring they are directing their own learning and owning their own behavior through gentle but specific reminders and conversations. This is a Yak Scale that is like a noise meter. This helps keep the student noise at a workable level and also allows them to save up free-talking time by earning Yak Points.

LITERACY
Six Traits + 1
The Six Traits + 1 model guides the writing process. Students learn about the parts of writing and use rubrics to guide their learning, for self reflection, and teacher feedback. The traits help students understand each element in writing a story so that they have the chance to write strong seed stories and narrowed narratives. |
Reading Workshops
Students follow the reading workshop model. They read Just Right Books that are determined using a DRA test. Then they read independently, in small guided reading groups, and they listen to read alouds. Students also meet with the teacher and the co-teacher for reading conferences. |
Writing Workshops
Students develop their writing through the writer's workshop model. Students are given mini lessons, time to work, and time to confer with the teacher. |
